Yes, marijuana has carcinogens, burning it can cause damage similar to that of cigarettes though likely to a lesser varying degree. The cleanest ways to ingest is through use of vaporizers or edibles.

My personal thought on it suppressing cancers would be that the reaction is psychosomatic.
